Signal corpsThe Signal Corps were groups of soldiers on both the Union and Confederate sides who communicated through flag signals. The flags that were used were called wig-wags, and they were developed for military field operations by an army surgeon during the Civil War. The flag system uses one flag for signaling, and the position of the flag, left, right, and front, represent the numbers 1, 2, and 3. The combinations of these numbers conveyed the message.
At night, the soldiers used a specially designed torch instead of a flag, which were used the same way to communicate as with the flags. During the daytime, different sizes and colors of flags were used depending on the atmospheric conditions. |
