Clara Barton
Clara Barton was a famous nurse and humanitarian who revolutionized hospitals in the Civil War. She began her work at the beginning of the war in 1861 in Washington D.C, where she helped care for soldiers. After her father's death in late 1861 she left the city to go help soldiers in the field.
One of the notable things Barton did in the war was bring supplies and help the other doctors in hospitals during the Battle of Antietam. She directed the able-bodied men to do first aid, carry supplies, and give food to patients. Throughout the war Barton traveled with her supply wagons to aid Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners. Most of the supplies were solicited by Barton herself. In 1880 Barton formed the American Red Cross, which is still a major organization to this day and provides relief to not only those in America, but also to the more unfortunate around the world. Barton dies in 1912 at the age of 91. |
This conflict is one thing I've been waiting for. I'm well and young and strong- young enough to go to the front. If I can't be a soldier, I'll help soldiers."
